In many ways, my worldview has been forged under the sea.

I am extremely passionate about environmental justice, sustainability, and conservation and my core values are fairness, resilience, and ambition. I have seen firsthand how so many of the most vulnerable communities and ecosystems are being increasingly threatened, often through no fault of their own, and I’m prepared to do everything I can to change that. While studying abroad in Seychelles for 6 months I was able to see the impacts of sea-level rise and coral bleaching first hand. During this time I worked with Global Vision International to monitor how coral recruits were recovering after their last bleaching even in 2016. It was fascinating and heartbreaking to see dead Acropora as far as the eye can see. Searching through the rubble for coral recruits up to five centimeters inspired me to pursue a future working to preserve these habitats. Nothing teaches you resilience like tracking the loss of the very same reef habitats you're fighting to protect.

Perhaps no one understands this more than the residents of Kiribati. Kiribati is a nation made up of atolls and faces a high risk of their land becoming uninhabitable in the foreseeable future. While on a research expedition there, I wrote a policy brief on commercial fishing license pricing while meeting directly with local leadership. Thanks to that experience, I’ve come to understand how responsible conservation policy involves diverse stakeholders as well as the importance of local buy-in. I cannot sit idly by while these places and communities that I love are threatened. Responsible ocean conservation policy is my passion and, though it's an ambitious undertaking, I am dedicated to making a difference.
